St George UT Bulging Disc Treatments
If you live in Southern Utah, and are suffering from a bulged disc, I have a very important message for you: You have treatment options!
The typical (wrong) game plan.
Too often, chiropractic patients report that they have been ‘living with the disc bulge.’ Often they report periodic (maybe twice a year) flare-ups, each lasting about a month. During that month, the typical patient will take a few days off of work, skip out on some family activities, and try some pain medication while the slipped disc heals itself.
That approach is wrong on several levels. As your chiropractor, I can tell you unequivocally that taking a few days off work and laying in bed will worsen your pain. Research is very clear on that. Light activity is much better than bed rest for the typical patient .
Reducing the family activities is also not a good idea. A research article published in Australia looked at social activities and acute pain. As people bowed out of social events, they tended to have more pain. In fact, the acute pain turned into chronic pain. I have a great video on the subject here on my website.
Pain medications have been proven to be a bad idea. They do reduce some pain, but at what cost? There is a high addiction rate. There are unwanted side effects– some of which are quite damaging. In fact, this link is to an article on how pain medications cause erectile dysfunction. Is the pill really worth the risk?
The disc bulge is not self-healing.
A slipped disc needs to heal, no doubt. But there is serious argument over how one defines the term heal. Once a disc herniates, a defect is formed on the disc. That defect is permanent. It never goes away on it’s own. It is true that the pain can be treated and can go away. But the defect remains. That is why so many people with a disc bulge have relapsed pain every few months. So, does it ‘heal’? no. Does the pain go away? yes. The ‘heal’ occurs with inflammation reduction. The pain with a disc is, more often than not, associated with the body’s response to the injury, rather than the injury itself.
