Breathalyze Your Surgeon Before He Cuts.
The American College of Surgeons reports that more than 15% of respondents in a survey indicated that they may have alcohol dependency problems. Alcohol abuse is a “significant problem” for surgeons, according to the research.
The February issue of the Archives of Surgery published the results. It reports that the rate of disorders of alcohol use (chronic use, abuse, and dependency) among the 7,197 responding surgeons was slightly higher than that of the general population.
The study also reported an association with medical errors. The study found that nearly 78% of surgeons who had a medical error in the previous three months also had an issue with alcohol abuse or dependency. Other stress factors included depression, personal problems, and burnout.
The next time you start looking for a surgeon for your lower back pain, consider these results and ask yourself if there are some alternatives that ought to be explored before you expose yourself to the risk.
